5 Mistakes You Are Probably Making on Your Resume

So when I created my first resume I had no idea what to look out for and I submitted my resume to over 15 positions without realizing the tiny little details that were destroying my resume.  You see, everyone always talks about what you need to do but never talks about the little details that could be stopping your resume from making the cut.

When I started working as a career tutor I started to see the same mistakes that I had made constantly and I had a light bulb moment, that people don’t talk about these things enough. Lucky for you I’m gonna share the TOP 5 mistakes I’ve seen beginners make in their resume so you don’t have to. Here’s the inside scoop:

Talking about your task and not your results

What you do every day is not your result. Think about it this way: your daily to-do list is in service of a larger goal, what is that goal?

Inconsistent tenses

Do not use “ing” verbs on your resume, stick with past and present tense verbs. So don’t start your bullet points with “assisting regional managers with..” and so on.

Talking about projects without referencing them

You don’t mention that you gave a huge presentation to over 15 people without mentioning the name/topic of that presentation, it's like mentioning you went to a really great restaurant and never said the name.

Reusing the same verb multiple times

It can be hard but do a quick scan of your resume bullet points to make sure you aren’t using verbs like “help”, “Assist” and “collaborate” repeatedly. Check out this list of great verb ideas from themuse.com

Listing your experience in the wrong order

Pro tip: your resume should be in chronological order of the dates completed not the dates started. So for like most of us who have positions that overlap, you start with the jobs you most recently ended and work your way down.

So there you go! Five simple mistakes that a lot of people overlook on their resume. So give your resume a quick glance over and see if you made any of these and that's the perfect chance to give your resume the boost it needs!

Good luck and happy job hunting!
