10 FREE Apps All College Students Should Have in 2020

Let’s face it, we’re all addicted to our devices.

In college, your devices can either be your enemy or your trusty sidekick. More and more devices are becoming almost necessary for college productivity.

10 Apps all college students should have

There are a lot of ways you can use your devices to help you in college and I’ve found that these are the five apps that have been the most useful during my freshman year of college.

The Apps I’ve mentioned include:

  • Health and Fitness apps

  • Productivity apps

  • lifestyle apps

And for your sanity and mine, I'm not gonna mention the obvious like google suite, you’re welcome.

1. Groupme

GroupMe is a messenger service and it seems like it's the most popular for college group chats. In my freshman year, we had several GroupMe group chats and they were lifesavers.

Almost everyone on campus was in some chat or another and it was the easiest way to communicate with everyone. More than likely your school also has a GroupMe chat and you need to get on that asap.

Pro tip: mute the chat because the constant notifications can get annoying

2. Eventbrite

Eventbrite is a MUST.

It's an event app and it tells you all the cool things that are happening in your area and even on campus! If you're always wondering what's the next move, Eventbrite will change the game.

It has something for everybody and you can find anything from parties to comedy shows to campus. It's a must-have if you are looking to save your sanity and have some fun on the weekends.

3. Mint

More than likely you're going to be solely managing your finances for the first time ever and even if your parents still give you the money you'll still want to know where it is going and budget properly.

Mint is perfect because it gives you a snapshot of your money and it also gives you alerts. It has so many amazing features and it allows you to take an active role with your money.

Mint is amazing if you're actually trying to be responsible with your money and not blow it all in one week.

4. Grammarly

Hands down one of the biggest lifesavers for college students out there.

Grammarly is a free app that helps with grammar and spelling in your writing. It comes as a browser extension and an app. The app comes in super handy when you're writing emails on the go! It can help reduce some of that stress of sending your professor a poorly written email.

I just got the app version on my phone and it comes in clutch.

5. Adobe scan

This app scans all your documents and makes digital copies of them that are easily accessible across devices. You can store important documents, notes, and any other material that you want to scan with your phone! It is amazing and it's really helpful for transferring handwritten notes to your computer.

6. Linkedin App

Linkedin should be apart of every college student’s social media intake.

The website is a professional networking site where people share their accomplishments and professional advice. The app makes it easy to check in every once in a while to see if there are cool opportunities you should be looking for and also a way for you to build professional relationships.

This may not be as exciting as Instagram or Snapchat but it’s just as important because every college student should be trying to build their professional network.

7. Google Keep

Google keep is a catch-all productivity app that does just about everything. This is an app where you can write notes, to-do lists, draw, add reminders, and much more.

I primarily use it to write notes, ideas, and to-dos, and it’s great because it allows you to structure it how you like. It’s perfect for random brain dumps and reminders that you can then transfer to your planner or google calendar. This app is also apart of google suite you can access your information absolutely anywhere.

8. Flora

Flora is a free app that allows you to block off time to get some work done without using your phone.

This app works by setting a time limit for how long you want to not have access to your phone and it plants a tree as you get work done and if you come out the app before you’re done it kills your tree.

Surprisingly this is very effective and it is a visual reminder of investing in yourself as you get work done.

9. Canva

Canva is a college student godsend because you create just about anything on it. It’s great for organization posters, presentations, LinkedIn headers, resumes, and much more.

Having the app will give you access to your graphics all the time and it means you can work on your posters from anywhere as long as you have your phone. You can edit and create graphics on the fly and it saves massive amounts of time.

10. Habit Bull

Habit Bull is a free app that allows you to track your habits.

This app is a must-have for college students to track how often they study, drink water, or workout.

This app helps you to keep up with good habits and actually get to achieve the goals you set for yourself. Habit Bull is a great accountability partner for students who need that extra push.

There are so many helpful apps out there for students

… but these are the ones that I think had the biggest impact on my year and that would be the most important to download that might not be as obvious as Gmail.
